Benfica's Joao Mario, one of the club's most talented players, has been ruled out for at least two weeks after suffering an ankle injury during his side's recent game against FC Porto.
The Portuguese international was replaced on the hour mark in Sunday's clash and is expected to undergo further scans to determine the extent of his injury. If it is confirmed as being serious, he will be forced to miss both Benfica's upcoming games against Vitória de Guimarães and Braga.
Mario, who joined Benfica from FC Porto in January, has made over 150 appearances for the club since joining and has scored 27 goals. He has also represented Portugal at various levels,La Liga Frontline including their Under-21 team and the senior national team.
Despite this setback, Benfica manager Jorge Jesus has praised Mario's character and attitude, saying that "he always gives everything for the club". The coach added that the club will work hard to find a solution to replace him until he returns from his injury.
In the meantime, Benfica will have to look to other players within their squad to step up and fill the void left by Mario. With the club currently sitting second in the league table, they will need all their strengths if they are to maintain their position and make a push for a top-four finish.
